Everything you wish art school taught you about being a working artist.

Design your path, experiment in community, build creative literacy, and become the artist we know you are.

⚡️You’re having 58,282 great ideas before you’ve hit the “brew” button on the coffee machine each morning. But, you’re second guessing your own creative genius before you even give those ideas a chance to come to life.

🧶 You’ve bought the ingredients for the project, laid them out on the counter, and then got overwhelmed/distracted/frustrated and walked away.

👻 Your half read copy of The Artist Way that you’re using as nightstand alternative is haunting you in your sleep, like you can HEAR mama Julia Cameron laughing at you. Surely you’re just creatively “blocked”?

DO YOU EVER FEEL LIKE (😎)…

🤮 Looking dumb, vulnerability hangovers, being perceived, or just generally “trying” is way too cringe but also like… you know doubt is keeping you from your dreams.

☠️ The three angels of the drafts folders (doubt, perfectionism, procrastination – obvi) have taken up residence in your minds eye.

🌀 You’re sitting on the edge of the pool, wanting to jump in but like… everyone else already has 1M views on Tik Tok, it’s probably too late to even try and everyone is “more talented”, so you just sit at the edge watching everyone else swim.

You’re not stupid

You’re not lazy

You’re not too much

The “problem” isn’t “you”, and it REALLY isn’t your big, beautiful, idea.

Our hypothesis is, you need to get back to your art:

🗺️ With a tailored road map that honours the context of your making, your ideas, your identity, and your creative brain.

🍊 With the time and space to think like an artist, and the community of other people committed to a creative life.

🕴️ To the skills YOU ALREADY HAVE to help support the parts of “business” or “marketing” that don’t thrill you.

🌀 With experimentation, play, and a little weird to keep it moving.

At the Academy, we trust your own artistic process to find the answers you seek, and know that creativity will show you the way. We will help you build a trusting and resilient relationship to your creativity.

The creative process is a journey. The Artist, our magical Hero, embarks on a quest. 🛤️ Except in this journey, we embark on it daily, hourly, in the bath tub, or on the bus to our day job. Over and over again. You deserve to feel supported on that journey, every step of the way.

Your creative journey awaits 🪶

We were two art school grads, wanting more. More time, freedom, creativity, accessibility, and community. We were sick of suffering at the hands of big daddy capitalism, and wanted to create a “day job” that centered and supported our own artistic practices. Enter DYE.

What we see every. day. is artists trying to “make it” in an entrepreneurial business land not built for them. We step off the island of creating for creations sake, and quickly drown in the ocean of business speak. The usual recipe:

(maybe) graduated art school + no time or money + need space and time to make art = start a business, learn how to run a business, find yourself chained to your desk 9 am - 9pm watching masterclasses and listening to podcasts on “human design for your biz” – and then all the sudden…have no time or space for your art.

🎺  DYE is here to help artists break free from the cycle, and build anew. Our pledge, “make business feel like art” guides all we do. 🎺

We built the Academy so you don’t have to choose. To share everything we have learned about untangling and weaving back together both business and artistic practice. 🧵

What we see in our work is that artists feel like they can’t run “successful” businesses because they are trying to fit into capitalism 101 – order, repetition, consistency. On the flip side, we see business owners (who don’t consider themselves artists, or what they sell “art”), completely shut down from value based and creative driven decisions, because some business course tells them (us) to abandon what feel/believe/think/know/want – to make money.

The constant question, “do I abandon myself, or do I abandon what I want to make?”

🕴️ Business 3am-sleep-paralysis- demon-thoughts

“Will I turn a profit so I can pay my rent?”

“Can I figure out that invoicing platform or hire an accountant?”

“How do I find aligned prospective clients?”

“Do logos even matter?”

🤡 Artist’s wake-up-in-a-cold-sweat-dead-of-night thoughts

“Will I turn a profit so I can pay my rent, AND buy paint supplies for my painting practice?”

“Does the invoicing platform I am using reflect my values?”

“How do I find clients that understand I am not a vending machine of ideas?”

“What very subtle hue of blue is the correct choice to use for my logo, and why does no one else take this as seriously as I do?”

An artist is concerned with connection, community, transformation, and the investigation in the process of creating. When we ask, “how does it feel?” vs. “will people buy this?”, we are committing to another way.

Being seasoned artists and entrepreneurs, we have developed the tools for navigating the balance between the planning of business with the expression of our art. 💃🏻 What we teach is using your art as a guide, to trust that the same process that leads you to the one act, can help unfold your next business move.

TLDR; inside the Academy, we help artists become well resourced to do what they love, without all the internet, tech bro, bullshit that tells them to abandon themselves.

What students inside The Academy are saying…. 💌

I was looking for help, support, and what to do — in the wrong places. I was so hungry for my dreams that I chose to eat the bullshit sandwich I was being served and was told was the only thing available for lunch. Now I've walked out of the diner and stumbled upon the fucking Mercato Centrale in Florence, Italy. // Hillary O.

Going through the many stages of process, and seeing what that can look like, providing a space that isn't about producing all the time, but actually the exact opposite. Providing a space where I can say with confidence that I am an artist and I belong in community with other artists. // Anna

Phoebe and Jacque opened a portal into a way of creating art that makes everything feel possible, and a little bit silly, and the stakes of making “good” or “bad” art were lowered dramatically. // Kimberly

Hillary A O'Dell, Owner of Home Ec NYC

“Working with Phoebe and Jacqueline has allowed me to feel safe creating space in my life for curiosity and experimentation.

I’ve always struggled with the fact that the overarching systems aren’t designed for me. I used to think that if I just tried harder, had more money, gained access, or found the key to unlock whatever was “wrong with me,” I could make it work – just like everyone else.

I tried seeking out spaces marketed for women, queer, neurodivergent, creative, (insert your niche flavor of person) entrepreneurs. Although on the surface they sounded right, the undercurrent was always the same: change yourself.

Phoebe and Jacqueline modeled immediate acceptance. Some light sobbing, a rageful rant, a bit of trial and error, doing absolutely nothing ... they’re like, ‘Yeah, we’re cool with that. You can do that here. In fact we do it all the time.’”
